- Description: Going back isn't the same thing as going backward. You can return to the places that hold your old memories without becoming the person you were when you made them.

*Sometimes the strangest thing about going back is realizing the place didn't change. You did.*

*I've been thinking about home a lot lately.*

*Probably because I bought a plane ticket.*

*It's sitting in my email like a threat.*

*I know that's dramatic. It's a flight home for Thanksgiving, not a summons to appear before Congress. But there are places you can return to without thinking twice, and then there are places that hold so many versions of you that walking back into them feels a little like meeting your former selves at the door.*

*Home is like that for me.*

*There’s the version of me who couldn't wait to leave. The one who packed for college like she was beginning the most important adventure of her life, while also bringing approximately seventeen things she absolutely did not need.*

*There’s the version who came back for holidays and immediately fell into old routines. Same seat at the table. Same people stealing food off my plate. Same arguments about things nobody actually cared about.*

*And there’s the version of me who left the last time.*

*I don't think I've wanted to meet her again.*

*She believed certain things were permanent. She thought she knew exactly what her life would look like. She trusted people without wondering whether trust was something she should ration.*

*I used to feel embarrassed by her.*

*That's difficult to admit.*

*For a while, I looked back at who I was before everything happened and thought she was naive. Too trusting. Too certain. Maybe even a little stupid.*

*She should have known.*

*She should have noticed.*

*She should have asked more questions.*

*It's amazing how quickly heartbreak can turn you against yourself.*

*Someone else hurts you, and somehow you end up putting the person you used to be on trial.*

*I've done that enough.*

*The girl I was didn't deserve my anger. She wasn't stupid for believing someone she loved. She wasn't weak because she built a future around people she trusted.*

*She was happy.*

*There shouldn't be shame in that.*

*I think that's part of why going home feels different now. I'm not only returning to a place filled with memories. I'm returning to a place where I remember exactly who I was when I made them.*

*And maybe that's okay.*

*We talk a lot about outgrowing people and places as if growth requires us to leave everything behind.*

*Sometimes it does.*

*But sometimes growing means being able to return without shrinking yourself to fit the person you used to be.*

*You can sleep in the same bedroom and have different dreams.*

*You can sit at the same table and want different things.*

*You can walk the same streets without retracing every step.*

*You can love where you came from without needing to become who you were there.*

*That's the part I'm trying to remember.*

*Going back isn't the same thing as going backward.*

*I don't have to avoid every place that contains an old version of my life. I don't have to surrender cities, songs, restaurants, holidays, traditions, or entire pieces of myself because someone else exists in those memories too.*

*They were my memories.*

*It was my life.*

*I was there.*

*And I'm allowed to keep the parts that still belong to me.*

*Maybe I'll get home and something will hurt.*

*Actually, let's be realistic.*

*Something will definitely hurt.*

*I'm going home for Thanksgiving. Someone will say the wrong thing, I'll find something I forgot existed, or a memory will appear without being invited because apparently memories have the same respect for boundaries as my family does.*

*But hurting isn't the same thing as breaking.*

*I know that now.*

*And maybe that's how you know you've changed.*

*Not because the past stops affecting you.*

*Because it doesn't get to decide what you do next.*

*I'm going home different.*

*Not healed. Not finished. Just different.*

*For once, I think that's enough.*

***You don't have to become who you were just because you return to where you've been. Growth doesn't disappear when something familiar hurts. You can honor the person you used to be without asking her to become you again.***

*Until next Tuesday.*
