- Description: Sometimes closure isn't finally getting all the answers. It's realizing your life doesn't have to stay on hold while you wait for them.

*Maybe closure isn't getting the answer you were waiting for. Maybe it's realizing you can live without it.*

*I used to think closure was a conversation.*

*A very specific conversation, actually.*

*There would be explanations. Questions would finally have answers. The things that never made sense would suddenly make sense. Someone would say exactly the right words in exactly the right order, and all the pieces would click into place.*

*I would understand.*

*And once I understood, I could move on.*

*Apparently, I have been waiting for heartbreak to provide customer service.*

*I'd like to speak to a manager, please. This ending was confusing and I would appreciate clarification.*

*Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be a help desk.*

*For months, I've replayed conversations looking for something I missed. I've reconstructed timelines. I've wondered when things changed, what I should have noticed, which moments were real and which ones only felt real because I didn't know what was happening outside of them.*

*There is a particular kind of exhaustion that comes from trying to solve a story when you're missing half the pages.*

*You keep believing the next question will be the one that makes everything make sense.*

*Why?*

*When?*

*Was any of it real?*

*Did you mean it when you said that?*

*Did you know what you were going to do when you kissed me goodbye?*

*Was I not enough?*

*That last one is particularly cruel because it disguises itself as a question about someone else when it's really an accusation against yourself.*

*I've spent too much time asking questions that require another person to answer before I can feel better.*

*That's a dangerous amount of power to hand someone who already hurt you.*

*I don't mean that answers don't matter.*

*They do.*

*There are things I would still like to know. There are explanations I probably deserve. There are words I imagined hearing so many times that I could practically write the conversation myself.*

*But I'm starting to understand that answers and closure aren't necessarily the same thing.*

*An answer can tell you what happened.*

*It can't undo it.*

*An apology can acknowledge the damage.*

*It can't make you the person you were before it happened.*

*An explanation might make someone's choices easier to understand.*

*It doesn't mean you have to accept them.*

*Maybe that's where I've been stuck.*

*I thought understanding was the final step.*

*If I could just figure out why, I could put everything down.*

*But maybe some things don't become easier because you understand them.*

*Maybe sometimes the only answer is that someone made a choice you never would have made.*

*And you have to build a life around the fact that they did.*

*I went home for Thanksgiving last week.*

*I was worried about the memories waiting there for me.*

*They were there.*

*Of course they were.*

*But something surprised me.*

*So was everything else.*

*My family was still loud. The food was excessive. Someone irritated someone else before we'd even finished eating. I laughed more than I expected to.*

*There were moments that hurt.*

*And then those moments passed.*

*That's it.*

*Nothing dramatic happened.*

*No revelation.*

*No grand sign from the universe.*

*I just had a holiday.*

*A real one.*

*Not the one I imagined I'd have a year ago. Not the one I would have chosen.*

*But mine.*

*And I think that's when something shifted.*

*I've been waiting for the past to release me.*

*Maybe it already did.*

*Maybe I'm the one who keeps going back to ask one more question.*

*Closure might not be a door someone else closes for you.*

*Maybe it's the moment you stop standing in the doorway.*

*That doesn't mean forgetting.*

*It doesn't mean forgiving before you're ready.*

*It doesn't mean deciding what happened was okay just because you're tired of carrying it.*

*It means accepting that you don't need every missing piece before you're allowed to keep living.*

*There may always be questions.*

*I don't love that.*

*I like answers.*

*I'm in law school. We practically build our personalities around them.*

*But I'm learning that life isn't obligated to give us a satisfying conclusion before beginning the next chapter.*

*Sometimes the ending is messy.*

*Sometimes you don't understand it.*

*Sometimes someone leaves you with questions they never bother answering.*

*And sometimes you have to decide that your life is too important to spend waiting for them to come back with an explanation.*

*I still have questions.*

*I just don't think I need all the answers anymore.*

*Maybe that's closure.*

***Closure isn't always something another person gives you. Sometimes it's deciding that what you already know is enough: you were hurt, you survived it, and you deserve a life that isn't built around waiting for someone else to explain why.***

*Until next Tuesday.*
