- Description: Sometimes healing means looking past the person who left long enough to notice the people who never did. The ones who keep showing up, making room, and reminding you where you belong.

*Some people love the version of you that asks for nothing. The ones who stay learn how to love the version that can't pretend anymore.*

*There is a strange thing that happens when you stop being okay. People start asking when you're going to be okay again. Not directly, usually. They’re more polite than that. They ask if you’re feeling better, if things are getting easier, if you’ve been getting out more. They tell you that you sound good, and there’s always this tiny note of relief in their voice when they say it. Like maybe the difficult part is over. Like maybe you can all get back to normal now.*

*I don't blame them. Sadness makes people uncomfortable, especially sadness without an expiration date. We know what to do with the first few weeks of someone falling apart. We bring food. We check in. We offer couches and wine and terrible advice we found on Pinterest. We say things like, I'm here if you need anything. And most people mean it. The problem is that eventually life keeps moving, just not always for the person everyone was waiting to get better.*

*I've been thinking about that a lot lately. About the people who stayed after there was nothing left to fix. The ones who stopped asking if I was okay because they figured out I would tell them when I was. The ones who let me be quiet without trying to fill it. The ones who invited me even when I said no five times in a row, and never made me feel guilty for saying no a sixth.*

*There are people who love you loudly, and then there are people who love you consistently. I'm starting to think the second kind might be harder to recognize. They don't always make speeches. They don't announce that they're choosing you. They just keep showing up.*

*Sometimes it's a phone call you don't answer. Sometimes it's a text that says nothing more important than Did you eat? Sometimes it's someone sending you a picture of something stupid because they know you'll laugh. Sometimes it's your mother asking for the fourth time whether you've booked your flight home for Thanksgiving, despite the fact that you have very clearly been avoiding answering her.*

*Hypothetically.*

*Families are particularly talented at refusing to take a hint.*

*I've spent months thinking about the person who left. Who he was. Who I thought he was. What I missed. What I should have seen. What I deserved. What I didn't. There are only so many ways to dissect a heartbreak before you have to admit you're cutting into the same thing over and over again.*

*And somewhere in all that looking at who left, I think I forgot to look at who stayed.*

*That's the strange thing about loss. It has terrible manners. It walks into the room and demands all the attention. Meanwhile, love is sometimes sitting quietly in the corner, waiting for you to notice it never went anywhere.*

*I used to think being chosen would feel bigger. More dramatic. Like someone fighting for you. Refusing to lose you. Making some impossible declaration that proves, finally, that you mattered enough. Maybe sometimes it does. But lately, I'm starting to think being chosen can look embarrassingly ordinary.*

*A seat saved for you. A phone that keeps ringing. A door you don't have to knock on. Someone who doesn't need you to be entertaining, impressive, healed, or even particularly pleasant before they're happy you're there.*

*Maybe that's family. Not necessarily the people who share your blood or the people who have known you the longest. Just the people who make room for every version of you, even the inconvenient ones. Especially those.*

*I'm going home for Thanksgiving. I haven't decided how I feel about that yet. There are memories there I haven't touched in months, places I've avoided, and people who knew me before all of this who might look at me long enough to realize I'm not exactly the person who left.*

*Part of me wishes I could wait until I felt completely normal again. But I'm beginning to suspect that person isn't coming back, and maybe she isn't supposed to.*

*Maybe going home isn't about returning as the person you were. Maybe it's finding out whether there's still a place for the person you've become.*

*I think there will be.*

*Some people have been holding it for me this whole time. I just wasn't looking.*

***Pay attention to the people who stay. The ones who make room for you when you're hurting, changing, or hard to reach. Sometimes being chosen isn't someone fighting to keep you. It's realizing who never made you question whether you belonged in the first place.***

*Until next Tuesday.*
