Becoming Someone I Never Planned to Be
Don't spend so much time grieving the person you used to be that you forget to celebrate the person you're becoming. Growth rarely looks the way we imagined, but that doesn't make it any less beautiful.
"Sometimes life doesn't return you to the person you were. Sometimes it introduces you to someone you never knew you could become."
When I was younger, I had a very specific picture of what twenty-five would look like.
I thought I'd have a carefully mapped-out life. I imagined certainty, not questions. I believed that if I worked hard enough and loved deeply enough, life would reward both.
I didn't know then that life doesn't make promises.
It offers possibilities.
Some of them become reality.
Others quietly become memories of futures that never happened.
For a long time, I mourned the version of myself I thought I'd become. She smiled more easily. She trusted without hesitation. She believed every goodbye was temporary and every promise meant forever.
I loved her.
I also realize now...
She had never been tested.
The woman I am today asks harder questions. She notices the small things people say and the even smaller things they don't. She protects her peace more fiercely than she ever protected her pride.
Some people might call that guarded.
I call it earned.
I've stopped apologizing for the boundaries that helped me survive.
I've stopped explaining why I need quiet after loud seasons.
I've stopped believing strength has to look fearless.
Sometimes strength looks like saying no.
Sometimes it looks like asking for help.
Sometimes it looks like choosing to stay soft in a world that keeps giving you reasons to become hard.
I think that's the version of myself I'm most proud of.
Not because she's perfect.
Because she kept becoming.
There are still days I miss the woman I used to be.
But there are more days now when I feel grateful for the woman she made possible.
I don't think healing gives us our old life back.
I think it gives us a new one.
And maybe...
That's been the gift all along.
Until next Tuesday.
