The Ghosts We Bring Home
The ghosts you carry aren't proof that you're broken. They're proof that you loved, hoped, dreamed, and believed in something beautiful. Let them visit when they need to, but don't let them convince you to live in a house you've already outgrown.
"The hardest ghosts to live with are the ones no one else can see."
Halloween has always fascinated me.
Not because of haunted houses or scary movies, but because for one night every year we pretend ghosts are something to be afraid of.
I don't think they are.
I think most of us carry them every day.
Mine don't rattle chains or whisper from dark hallways.
They show up in ordinary places.
An empty seat across a coffee shop table.
A wedding invitation addressed to one instead of two.
A city I thought we'd discover together.
A song I haven't been able to listen to all the way through.
Those are my ghosts.
For a long time, I believed healing meant getting rid of them.
I thought there would come a day when I wouldn't think about the life I imagined, the plans I quietly made, or the woman I expected to become.
I waited for that day.
It never came.
Instead, something else happened.
The memories became quieter.
Not because they disappeared.
Because they stopped asking to be relived.
That's the part no one tells you.
Healing doesn't erase the ghosts.
It teaches them where they belong.
They stop sleeping beside you every night.
They stop following you into every conversation.
Eventually...
They become visitors instead of roommates.
There are still moments when one catches me by surprise.
A little girl laughing with her father.
A couple arguing over which pumpkins to buy.
The first cold morning that smells like October.
For just a second, I remember the future I thought I was walking toward.
Then I remember something even more important.
I'm walking toward a different one now.
And that's okay.
There was a time when I believed letting go of the life I imagined meant betraying it.
Now I think honoring that dream simply means being grateful it taught me how deeply I was capable of loving.
Not every future is meant to happen.
Some exist only to prepare us for the one that finally will.
I don't hate the ghosts anymore.
They remind me that I loved with my whole heart.
And if I'm capable of that once...
I'm capable of it again.
Until next Tuesday.
